Holy Goodness It's Snowing

Seriously, it is snowing in Waco, Texas. I've tried to take a picture with my phone out my window, but it just looks blurry. So when I left to run a quick errand I took a picture before I brushed off my car....
I think I'm the only one in the parking lot who actually has a snow brush in my car. We might leave work early today. If so, I'll post pictures of our snowball fight later...

Happy Birthday Love!

Did you know that Dairy Queen is celebrating the 25th birthday of the Blizzard? Did you also know that the love of my life turns 25 years old today? He's pretty great.

Happy Birthday Honey. I love you!

I am so cold...

The heat in our office went out this morning. On most days in Texas that would be fine, but today is one of the few days where the lovely weather is actually in the 30s. We also have giant windows in our office that are usually wonderful, but today have no insulation. I think I was a little colder than everyone else since I also woke up late and came to the office with wet hair (don't worry it was pulled back into a very professional pony tail). So I'm sitting in the intern office (it has no windows) in my boots, a puffy vest and a scarf. I also went home at lunch and grabbed hot cocoa and marshmallows for everyone in the office. Those frowns just turned upside down.

Hope everyone is enjoying the cold weather just as much as us! Did you know it's snowing in Dallas again? We are suppose to get snow here tonight, but I won't hold my breath.

Oh, and by the way, marshmallows from Central Market and Williams-Sonoma are heaven on earth - especially when the heat goes out...

kids these days...

I have a confession. You know all of those New Year's resolutions I made...write more...read more...send gifts...learn photoshop...knit and crochet more...make an adventure...

Well, Greg and I have definitely made an adventure...through the eight worlds of Super Mario.

We're not finished yet. The eighth world is pretty hard and there are levels that that we want to unlock in the past worlds. But here's my question - and the point of the post - how the heck did kids unlock Mario worlds? Nowadays, kids have it so easy. All they have to do is google (there it is again) something and they get the answer. Which I did today. I wanted to know how to get to the cannons. I have a new found respect for the dominators of the original Mario. You figured it out on your own. You knew that if the game wasn't working, just blow into it and magically it worked again.

My favorite game on the original Nintendo was definitely Excite Bike. Just ask Greg. I can mimic the sound perfectly. However, thanks to my brother, I was not allowed to play very often. But that's ok, now he's wonderful, gives me pep talks during the day and video chats with me on gmail at work sometimes. I love technology. and I love you brother. and sister too. I love you too.

twig beans

Did you know that edamame means "twig bean" in Japanese? At least it does according to wikipedia.

As I was eating edamame at lunch this week and it made me wonder what kind of nutrients were in them. I always order them, but lately I want to know more about what I'm eating. I remember coming home at some point in college and my sister as the "cool California girl" had me try these little twig beans. I fell in love with them. I would buy them frozen at the grocery store and make them as a snack while I studied or watched TV (I probably did more of the latter.)

Hoping that I could say my lunch was oh so healthy, I googled (I love that "googled" is now an actual word in our vocabulary) the nutritional information. According to an RD at WebMD.com in just a half-cup serving of shelled edamame you can get:
  • 120 calories
  • 9 grams fiber
  • 2.5 grams fat
  • 1.5 grams polyunsaturated fat (0.3 grams plant omega-3 fatty acids)
  • 0.5 gram monounsaturated fat
  • 11 grams protein
  • 13 grams carbohydrate
  • 15 mg sodium
  • 10% of the Daily Value for vitamin C
  • 10% Daily Value for iron
  • 8% Daily Value for vitamin A
  • 4% Daily Value for calcium

9 grams of fiber is about the same amount you'll find in 4 slices of whole-wheat bread or 4 cups of steamed zucchini. It has almost as much protein as it does carbohydrate. It contains around 10% of the Daily Value for two key antioxidants; vitamins C and A. And for a plant food, it's quite high in iron; it has about as much as a 4-ounce roasted chicken breast.

A great little boost to any day.
